I purchased Immortal Fenyx Rising on the Epic Games Store during a discount as I heard from some Youtube game reviewers that Immortal Fenyx Rising was a really good game. After finishing it, I would like to record my thoughts on it while it is still clear on my mind.
Firstly some quantifiable statistics, the game cost me approximately U$20 and took me 55 hours to finish with a decent amount of exploration. I contemplated buying the Gold Edition which included all the DLCs but after finishing the game and seeing what the DLC entails, I am really glad I didn't. I am quite certain I wouldn't enjoy the DLC's. That is not to say that I didn't enjoy the game, I quite enjoyed it but there are also aspects that are quite tiresome.
To begin with the things I enjoyed; the combat is absolutely stellar. The dodging and parrying mechanic is quite forgiving and also extremely rewarding to employ. The gear and abilities enable various playstyles to different encounters and boss fights. The enemy variety is decent, there's not that many but there's enough to prevent you from getting sick of it in a 50 hour run. The exploration traversal is also quite decent, it's easy to explore the map whether on a mount or through flying. The graphics are also quite good, the setting in Immortals Fenyx is bright and pleasant to look at. This suits the story which is light hearted and comedic, the setting of Greek Mythology is one that I enjoyed and chock full of fun references. The story is simple and good enough whilst being well presented by the narrators Zeus and Prometheus.
Now moving on towards the things I didn't enjoy as much. First of all, the game is loaded with an aggravating amount of puzzles. The puzzles are in the form of Vaults, Chest puzzles, Myth Challenges and Lyre challenges. The Vaults that are essentially dungeons you go through to get more stamina for traversal and are essentially puzzle dungeons. To acquire chests or upgrades through challenges, almost everything requires solving some sort of puzzle to progress. When I got the game I wasn't expecting these amount of puzzles. The puzzles are generally not too difficult to solve and occasionally entertaining but I was expecting an action game and the amount of puzzles just detract from the stellar combat experience. Some people might not mind it but I honestly didn't really enjoy it after the 20th puzzle I had to solve which just felt like a waste of time near the end. This made me glad I didn't buy the Gold Edition because the first DLC is from what I can see just puzzle vaults over and over again. Another thing is that the map design is extremely cluttered with chests and things of similar ilk. Providing the player with item chests to find is fine and dandy but there is just too many. This made finding worthwhile items a pain and as you seek out chests you eventually get tired of finding the same item over and over again which only leads to Cosmetic unlocks. Some people might enjoy it but after a while I cannot imagine anyone who still find it rewarding just to unlock cosmetics you are never going to use. I do appreciate the cosmetic customization that the game provides but wish it was implemented differently in how to acquire it.
All in all, I did immensely enjoy a lot of the game whilst I found that some aspects of it are just tiresome time wasters. This game is not recommended for the completionist unless you have a lot of time to spare. From a scale of 1-10 in terms of personal enjoyment, I would give it a 7.5.
